Alderson Community Food Hub

"To provide access to nutritious food, to foster community participation, and to cultivate an awareness of sustainable food systems in the Greenbrier Valley."

Alderson Community Food Hub is an organization working towards the networking of markets, grocers, gardens and citizens to provide the tools necessary to become a more localized community.

The Food Hub wants to mutually benefit consumers AND producers, therefore they offers yearly volunteer memberships ($25) and non-volunteer memberships ($40).

Besides supporting local community organizations with a membership you also receive benefits such as:

  • 5% at the Green Grocer
  • a plot at the community garden
  • a spot at the community market
  • decision making influence
  • monthly order from Frankferd Farms through the Buying club and more!

Issues of Focus:

Food Sustainability is becoming more and more necessary in the United States as our community populations continue to grow at rates faster than ever seen before. It is up to the localization movement to begin the groundwork for more sustainable and secure food within one's hometown beginning with you. The Alderson community has taken the initiative to coordinate communication between the workers of the town including all citizens across the board. From farmers to bank tellers we will see a fuller understanding among the people about what, how and where there food is coming from with open accessibility.

History of Organization:

The organization's Community Market began in the Spring of 2011 with the initial goal of strengthening the local economy by means of production and sale of goods right in Alderson. These goods included everything from home baked goods, arts and crafts, fresh roast coffee and of course local produce grown from the gardeners and farmers of Alderson.

Programs and Projects

With Alderson Community Garden's partnership with Grow Appalachia formed a technical training workshop which supports seeds, tools, soil testing, soil amendments and training to be able to sustain your very own community or home garden.
