Girls Reaching Out (G.R.O.) is a nonprofit service outreach organization at UNC Greensboro. This organization was founded by Khristina Cunningham in 2006. She created the organization as a student at UNCG when she saw the lack of leadership and confidence among the young women at UNCG, and decided that something had to be done. This goal of Girls Reaching Out is to uplift, inspire, and encourage the young women (10-25) in the Greensboro community.
G.R.O. has a mentoring program, Leading Ladies of Lincoln. This is an after-school program designed to mentor young ladies of The Academy of Lincoln located in Greensboro NC. The focus of this mentoring program is to implement the development of womanhood and other significant qualities in the lives of young ladies. Some of these qualities include respect, self-esteem and worth, integrity, ambition, drive and much more. The mentors meet once a week with the students at Lincoln Academy to engage with the girls. They play different games and activities with the girls that correlate with some of the qualities listed above with hope of building and maintaining healthy relationships that will affect the lives of these girls in a positive way.
Jasmine Spears currently serves as the 2018-2019 President of GRO. She is control of organizing and setting up the events with the help of other executive board members. She explains how she enjoys her position as president, despite all the hard work that goes into it. “I like being GRO’s president; at times it can be overwhelming but it is also very rewarding. I have a great team of e-board members who help me out. We work together to plan and execute events, which makes things a lot easier than me doing everything on my own” she said.
