Overview

UNCG Rugby is the collective name for both the men and the women's rugby teams active on UNCG Campus. They are a student-led and run organization with support from the Assistant Director of the Competitive Sports and Campus Activities and Programme (CAP). Both are funded in part by the Student Government Association. The Men's team was established in 1977, and the women's team was established in  2002.  Both teams have seasons where they play XVs rugby and VII rugby. Fall semester is XVs and Spring semester is VIIs, respectively.

Men's Team

The UNCG Men's rugby team competes in two leagues - the National Small College Rugby Organization or NSCRO and the USA Rugby Southern Conference (North). They play their home matches on the Recreational Field of UNCG, on Kenilworth St. UNCG Men's Rugby is currently ranked as the second lowest team in Southern Conference. This is due to their low numbers, and low experience of the team. It has been noted by a number of rugby officials and coaches that UNCG Rugby's soul is there.

The current sitting president at time of writing (11/20/2017) is Jared Lee, a junior. The team captain and head of recruitment is Chris Connell, a sophomore.  The team is coached by Steve Ackrish, a UNCG Rugby Alumni (1982) himself, and Jake Roberts. Both Jake and Steve coached the local men's rugby team; Triad.

Women's Team
The UNCG women's team play one set season of XVs and VIIs similar to that of the men's, with the VIIs also being in the spring.  The women's team tend to usually enjoy more recruits than the Men's team.

Culture

Unlike other team or club sports, most rugby teams, including UNCG, host socials after their games. These socials are held by the host team and usually involve a cookout, and then a drinking party when the coaches leave.

Drinking culture is a large part of rugby, and some say that it is 50% of the game is to drink with your teammates. For the UNCG men's team, the rugby parties are usually held at the rugby house. The rugby house is usually a house that is inhabited by at least one or more of the team. This house hosts both the after game socials and the rugby team's parties.

Alumni

The UNCG rugby alumni are one of the largest contributors towards UNCG donations, and host an annual 'alumni weekend' for the players, where alumni play the current players. This usually occurs at the homecoming weekend.
