Firemen pour water into the former Gedroiz Homestead at 112 Lake St. in a futile effort to save the two story wooden structure Saturday. Firemen were called to the scene at 9:10 p.m. when neighbors reported flames shooting from the building, which was owned by Jack Decker of Saranac Lake. The building was completely engulfed in flames by the time firemen arrived, and the men spent a great deal of the early stages of the firefight protecting the woods and other buildings which surround the house from embers carried by the wind. A police investigation into the cause of blaze is nearing completion, according to Detective Peter Kunath, who said that the blaze was apparently "not intentional." Witnesses report that a light-colored pickup truck was observed leaving the scene at a high rate of speed just prior to the fire, but Kunath said that arson apparently was not the cause of the blaze. The property is the proposed sight of a $1 million housing complex planned by Lake Placid developer Kevin Carroll. Demolition work, including the use of torches, was reportedly going on at the site the day of the blaze.
