Alfred H. Otis was a son of Joshua Otis, one of the first residents of Keese Mills, for whom Otisville was named. He was farmer, lumberman and a guide; one of his clients was U.S. President William McKinley. Al Otis was one of the guides photographed by A. W. Durkee at Paul Smith's boathouse on August 8, 1884, and again on October 2, 1885.
He helped his father clear land for a farm that later became part of Paul Smith's St. Regis Golf Club.
He was a noted singer, with a vast repertoire of old-time songs.
He is supposed to have pitched two tons of hay the summer before he died.

BROTHER OF PERU WOMEN IS BURIED
Alfred H. Otis, veteran Paul Smiths guide, died Sunday night at his home in that community at the age of 81. His death removes the last of the six Otis brothers two of whom were Civil War veterans.
Surviving are two sons, Harry and Arthur of Paul Smiths; three sisters, Mrs. Mary McLaughlin, 93, of Malone, Mrs. Emma Durgan, 75, of Peru, and Mrs. Nettie Bailey of Peru.
The funeral was held yesterday afternoon from Brighton.
