Albert Irving Evans, Jr. played an important part in coordinating the Saranac Lake community's effort to restore the Pine Ridge Cemetery. He worked at his mother's cure cottage, at 6 Grandview Terrace. He was the son of newspaperman Albert Irving Evans, Sr.; his mother, Winifred Durkee Evanswas a registered nurse.

Albert Irving Evans Jr.

PINEHURST, N.C. - Albert Irving Evans Jr., 74, died suddenly on Dec. 23, 1995 at his home here.

Born Aug. 15, 1921 in Saranac Lake, he was the son of Albert Irving Evans and Winifred (Durkee) Evans. Raised in Saranac Lake, he was a chemical engineering major at Columbia University in New York City. Upon enlistment in the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II, Mr. Evans served as a chemical technician in the 876th Chemical Company stationed in England and was awarded a Presidential Citation.

Until his retirement to Pinehurst, he resided in Scarsdale and was resident of Byram Surgical, Inc. in Greenwich, Conn, which specialized in all aspects of ostomy care.

Mr. Evans had been an officer and advisor to the Sandhills Ostomy Association. As vice chairman of Pinehurst Community Watch, he was instrumental in establishing the 911 system. In recognition of his 7-and-a-half-years as Area Coordinator of Pinehurst Community Watch at Lake Pinehurst, the village awarded him an official citation.

Mr. Evans played an important part in coordinating the Saranac Lake community's effort to restore the Pine Ridge Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Hobson Evans; five daughters, Beryl Evans of Knoxville, Tenn., Dixie Fay of Herndon, Va., Wendy Tramm of Cary, N.C., Diana Cooke of Springfield, Va. and Donna Evans of Pinehurst, and four grandchildren.

His wish to be. an organ donor was fulfilled. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Pine Ridge Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 467, Saranac Lake, NY 12983.
