Alfred L. Benware Jr. was a World War II veteran.  He was a son of Alfred and Lela (Anderson) Benware Sr.

SARANAC LAKE — Alfred L. Benware Jr., 74, of School Street, Bloomingdale, died July 7, 1995 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Born April 27, 1921 in Potsdam, he was the son of Alfred and Lela (Anderson) Benware Sr.

Mr. Benware was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army. He had been employed by the town of St. Armand from 1951 to 1965, when he went to work for the New York State Conservation department until 1974. He worked for Paul Smith's College from 1974 until his retirement in 1981. He had been a caretaker at Buck Pond for one year and for various private camps. He worked summers at Fish Creek Campsite from 1982 until 1992.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed camping.

Survivors include his wife, the former Beatrice Lavery of Bloomingdale who he married on Sept. 14, 1946; one son and a daughter-in-law, Thomas and Regina Benware of Bloomingdale; one brother, Rae Benware of Rockville, Md.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother and one sister, Willard Benware and Sarah Califano.

Calling hours and a Bible vigil were held Sunday at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was to be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Paul's Church in Bloomingdale with the Rev. Joseph Trombley officiating. Interment will follow in St. Paul's Cemetery in Bloomingdale.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Adirondack Medical Center, the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad or St. Paul's Church in care of the funeral home.
