Alvera M. Fortune

Alvera M. Fortune, 88, of 20 Church St., Saranac Lake, died Saturday, March 5, 2005 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Born on April 5, 1916 in Quincy, Mass., she was the daughter of Dionisius and Marcelina (Fernandez) Diego.

Alvera's parents emigrated to America from Santander, Spain. She was very proud of her Spanish heritage. Alvera had been a resident of Saranac Lake for most of her life but grew up in Northfield, Vt. She was a graduate of Northfield High School and attended the University of Vermont.

She married Andrew Fortune on Nov. 21, 1943 in Northfield, Vt.

Alvera enjoyed her work with the St Bernard's School Mother's Club and was a Cub Scout den mother. She was well known for her cooking and baking, especially cookies. Alvera was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and her life was centered around her family.

She is survived by her husband Andrew, of Saranac Lake; two sons: Andrew J. Fortune Jr. and his wife Ruth of Saranac Lake and Timothy J. Fortune and his wife Diana of Bloomingdale; three grandchildren: Christopher A. Fortune of Saranac Lake, Timothy R. Fortune of Tupper Lake and Ann E. Fortune of Saranac Lake; a sister, Anita Oddy of Chesapeake, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, John Diego; and her sister, Aurora Gillespie.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 8 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake.

A Bible vigil will be held, at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, March 9 at St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake with the Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer, the Rev. Patrick O'Reilly, and Msgr. C.J. McAvoy officiating. Burial will be in May in the Pine Ridge Cemetery in Saranac Lake.

Friends wishing to remember Alvera may make memorial contributions to Uihlein Mercy Center in care of the funeral home.
