Anita Mae Steidl, 89, formerly of Old Military Road in Saranac Lake, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 1995 at the Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid where she had been a resident since 1992.

Born Jan. 13, 1906 in Easton, Maine, she was the daughter of Daniel H. and Effie Mae (Shaw) Jones.

She married Dr. John Steidl on Jan. 21, 1931 in Saranac Lake. He predeceased her in 1938.

Mrs. Steidl trained and worked at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston as a registered nurse. She moved to Saranac Lake to cure for tuberculosis in the 1920s and her husband became a staff physician at the Trudeau Sanatorium.

Mrs. Steidl worked as a registered nurse at the sanatorium and later at Ray Brook hospital until her retirement in 1970. She was a resident of Saranac Lake until 1977 and moved to Greenwich, Conn. to be with family.

She was a member of the St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Saranac Lake and was a member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include two sons, John Henry Steidl, Jr., of Philadelphia, Pa., and Daniel Hilreth Steidl of Greenwich, Conn. and Rainbow Lake; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. she was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Jones.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service was held at the convenience of the family at the St. John's in the Wilderness Cemetery in Paul Smiths. Funeral arrangements were in the care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or to the Uihlein Mercy Center in care of the funeral home.
