Avery Hazard (also spelled Hazzard) was an early resident of Bloomingdale, having acquired one of Gerrit Smith's 40 acre lots c. 1850.  He was a son of a Revolutionary War soldier, Charles Henry Hazard.

His son, Alexander, was one of the founders of the Brookside Cemetery in Bloomingdale, where he is buried.

The 1860 U. S. Census has the black farmer Avery and family living in St. Armand.
