William Root, Jr. was a teacher at the Browning School for Boys in New York City and the son of William Root, Sr., the proprietor of Lone Pine Camp on Osgood Pond. He also played short-stop and second base for the Saranac Lake Chiefs, a semi-pro baseball team.

SARANAC LAKE - William Root, 57, died Friday, Feb. 29 in the Bronx. He had been a lifelong resident of the Bronx and the owner of the Lone Pine Camp in Paul Smiths.
Mr. Root was born Dec. 12, 1922 in the Bronx, the son of William and Helen Sylvester Root. He attended Riverdale Country Day School and Cornell University. He was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the 10th Mountain Infantry.
He was a member of the teaching staff at the Browning School for Boys and a vestryman in Christ Church in Riverdale. He was also a member of the Saranac Lake Golf Club, BPOE 1508, and he played baseball for the Brighton Blues and the Saranac Lake Chiefs. He is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Everett; two sons, James S. and William E., both of the Bronx; and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Corrine Everett.
Funeral services will be held at, the Fortune Funeral Home in the spring, with Rev. Philip Snyder officiating.

Billy Root with his late surge of hitting currently leads the Saranac Lake Chiefs in the hitting department with a batting average of 500 even. Warren Schlackenreider follows with an average of .375. Clyde Baker is right behind him with an average of .371. However, Twirp Bell has the most hits on the team with twelve, batting an even .340. Schlirkenreider leads in the runs scored department with eight followed by Billy Root with seven and Clarence Bell and Bob Stringer with six apiece.

Mr. and Mrs. William Root Jr., of Lone Pine Camp and New York City, are the parents of a son born at 9:20 a.m. Friday at the Saranac Lake General Hospital.
