Byron Cameron was the son of Duncan Cameron, the proprietor of the Ray Brook House, a popular resort hotel in Ray Brook that was located on the site of the present State Police Headquarters; Byron ran it later, but it burned in 1907.  He was also chief Game Protector at the turn of the last century.

The successful candidate among those who took the civil service examination at Malone for game protector for Franklin county is Byron Cameron, of Saranac Lake, who received notice of his appointment on Tuesday of last week and immediately went to Albany to confer with the commissioner on his new duties. He had previously been a game protector in the service of the state and the fact no doubt had much bearing on the fact that he secured the position. He is a born woodsman, having been for many years a hunter, trapper, guide, lumberman, hotel keeper and farmer in this Adirondack country. He at one time guided Grover Cleveland on his fishing expeditions at Ray Brook, when Mr. Cameron's father was proprietor of the old Ray Brook House. He was in the state's service as game protector nearly 20 years ago previous to the term of office of Isaiah Vosburgh.

Byron Cameron, formerly of Ray Brook, who has been for about a year on the force of game protectors has been made division chief of the Northeastern district of New York to succeed Irad E. Featherston, of Ausable Forks, who lately resigned. Mr. Cameron's salary and expense allowance will be increased about $700 a year.

Byron Cameron, when C. C. C. foreman, stationed at Lake Placid, about twenty years ago, helped me survey and scout out the riding trail from Whiteface in to Vahis Cabins Gateway. This is along Roaring Brook, McKenzie Pond and the trail from McKenzie Mt into the back road to Lake Placid and a good ten mile ride. This is a trail ride not equaled or excelled in the whole state of New York.
