Carl D. Smith of Malone established the Adirondack Enterprise in 1895 with Charles W. Lansing of Plattsburgh. In 1898 Smith sold his interest. He also served briefly as Village Clerk in 1898.

The Saranac Lake paper has again changed hands, Mr. Bell, editor of the “Adirondack" has sold his interest in the newspaper and printing business to A. J. Vosburgh and Carl D. Smith and the two papers will again be united as “The Adirondack Enterprise.” The fortunes, fickle and ever-changing as they seem to be of this village paper, would, if written, fill the pages of an immense book. We regret the loss of the little “Adirondack" which has many true friends not only here but at Lake Placid where it flourished as "The Mountain Mirror!”

Essex County Republican, December 13, 1896 (reprinted December 13, 1946)

Saranac Lake—J. W. Ball, editor of the Essex County News, Lake Placid, has bought the Adirondack Enterprise of Carl D. Smith. The two papers are to be united and published under the title "The Adirondacker.”
