Charles Herbert Erskine Griffith was an antiques expert, a resident curator of the Stevenson Cottage and a tuberculosis patient. He operated the Old Time Shop at 48 Main Street with William A. Way. He was often identified by his initials, as C. H. E. Griffith.

ANTIQUE EXPERT PASSES AWAY AT SARANAC LAKE
Known internationally as an expert in antiques, Charles Herbert Erskine Griffith, 58, one of Saranac Lake's prominent business men and curator for two years of the Stevenson memorial cottage, died last Wednesday night following six weeks' illness. He started an old-time shop in 1914 in small quarters that developed to a store now located at 48 Main street, one of the largest of its kind in the village.
Mr. Griffith had been curator of the Stevenson cottage since May, 1925, when the dwelling place of the late Robert Louis Stevenson was opened as an international shrine. He was founder of the Stevenson Society of America, Inc., and had served as a vice-president and director.
He was born in Pierrepointee, Bengal province, India, November 23, 1868, and came to America at the age of 19 years. He was formerly a partner in Cooper & Griffith, antique dealers, New York, before his health failed.
He was married twice, his first wife being Miss Sally Ritter, to whom was born a daughter, Mrs. Edmund Horton, Saranac Lake. He married Miss Lotta R. Tinkham in 1915. His wife and daughter, a brother, Percy, and sister, Mrs. Morris Smithers, London, survive.
