Cyrus E. Shelhamer was a World War II veteran.  He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus S. Shelhamer of 61 Shepard Avenue.

SARANAC LAKE - Cyrus E. Shelhamer, 83, formerly of 9 Station Road, Lake Clear, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002 at the Adirondack Medical Center.

Born in Saranac Lake on Sept. 28, 1919, Cyrus was the son of Cyrus and Anna (Miner) Shelhamer. He married Patricia Louis of Castorland on Feb. 14, 1949.

During his school years, Cyrus delivered newspapers and medicines for the Post Office Pharmacy until he volunteered for and joined the 27th Division of Army Infantry in 1941. He served in the Pacific Theater and was wounded twice, the first time in Saipan, Japan, and the second time, seriously on Okinawa. He received a number of medals and citations, including the Bronze Star for extraordinary bravery in battle. After being hospitalized for a year, he was honorably discharged in January, 1947.

After the war, Cyrus was employed by the New York State Department of Health in Albany and traveled throughout the state taking X-rays for tuberculosis control and performing multiphasic screenings. He retired in 1974 and returned to the Saranac Lake area. He enjoyed his life-long love of the outdoors and was an avid hunter, boater and fisherman. He was a communicant of St. John's Church in Lake Clear and was also a former Boy Scout leader and member of the American Legion, the Disabled Veterans Association and the 27th Division Association.

Cyrus is survived by his wife; three sons, Paul of Massachusetts, Cyrus of Hannacriox and Frank of Coxsackie; and one daughter, Anne Carrozza of Catskill.

He was predeceased in death by his parents and a sister, Ida Longtemps.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m, on Monday, Oct. 28 at St. John's Church in Lake Clear. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Lake Clear, Funeral arrangements are being made by Fortune-Keough Funeral Home.
