D. Henry Smith built a camp, Point O'View, on Lower Saranac Lake in about 1904.

With such a common name as Smith, it is hard to determine for certain the facts of his life, but these gleaned from ancestry.com seem likely. He was born March 5, 1839, the son of Thomas Underhill Smith and his wife Mary Ann Henry, and baptized in 1843 in the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church. In the 1860 U.S. census he was 21, living at home in Ward 21, District 2, New York City, with his parents, a younger sister, and apparently six servants, all with different last names. He is believed to be the D. Henry Smith who was made a member of the New York Stock Exchange on September 9, 1866, as in the 1870 census, while still living at home, his occupation was listed as Stock Broker. In 1872 in Manhattan he married Anna Macy.

On June 13, 1908, the New York Times reported the funeral of Daniel Henry Smith, describing him as "the aged Stock Exchange member who died at the Hotel Netherland on June 4."  He was buried on June 13 at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.
