Delia Perkett Dies, Early S.L. Merchant

Miss Delia Perkett, one of Saranac Lake's first merchants, died this morning at her home at 51 Bloomingdale Avenue after a long illness.

Miss Perkett, who was 95 years old, could recall the days when streets in Saranac Lake were unpaved and the sidewalks were of wood. She established a dry goods store at 41 Broadway in 1899, moving later to the present location of Everett's Clothing Store. In 1925 she moved to her home on Bloomingdale Avenue. She remained very active until this past winter.

Born on a farm in the town of Lewis, Miss Perkett was the daughter of the late Lewis and Flavia Sharnd [sic] Perkett. She is survived by a foster son, Carl Smith of Saranac Lake; three nieces, Mrs. Louis Parish of Bloomingdale; Mrs. Fred Gero, Saranac Lake; and Eudora Blood; Sand Point, Idaho. She also leaves three grandnieces, Mrs. Raymond McCasland, Mrs. George Dukette, Miss Lillian Gero, all of Saranac Lake and a grandnephew, Ernest Gero of Kansas.

A Rosary Service will be held Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock at the Fortune Funeral Home and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Keeseville.
