Dirk Ewan, 17, drowns

WAWBEEK — Seventeen-year old Dirk Ewan of Lake Clear, a well-known student and three-letterman at Saranac Lake Central High School, died early this morning, victim of an accidental drowning in Upper Saranac Lake.

According to State Police, Ewan was with a group of youths at the public dock adjacent to the Wawbeek Inn where he was employed for the summer as a dishwasher.

The group was attempting to throw one member of the party into the water, according to State Police, when the entire group fell off the dock.

All got out of the water except Ewan, who was fully clothed. A search by the group proved fruitless, and the State Police were called. The incident occurred at approximately 12:15 a.m. Ewan was a non-swimmer.

Three State Police divers recovered Ewan's body from eight feet of water, ten feet from shore, at 6:40 this morning. He was pronounced dead by Franklin County Coroner Ronald Keough.

Ewan's accomplishments in the athletic field at Saranac Lake High School were many. He played his first year of varsity football last year, as a member of the 1974 Northern League championship basketball team and one of the leading members of the Saranac Lake track team.

During last year's football season Ewan played as a halfback on offense and as a linebacker on defense. He came off the bench to earn a starting role as guard for the Redskins enroute to the Northern League hoop crown.

He was perhaps the best sprinter for the Redskins this fall finishing fifth in the 100 yard dash in the Can-Am races held here this spring.

He was popular among his fellow athletes, and well like by his coaches, his opponents and classmates.

Ewan was the son of Mr. and Mrs Harold Ewan of Lake Clear.
