Brothers Drown in Lake Flower
Double tragedy struck the Village of Saranac Lake Friday night as the two teenage sons of Donald and Ros Meineker drowned while swimming in Lake Flower. The boys Timothy 19, and Jeffrey 15, were swimming in the area behind the Old Armory when the accident occurred at about 8 p.m.
Franklin County Coroner Ronald B. Keough, appointed acting coroner by Dr. Herbert Bergamini of Essex County where the tragedy took place, said that the boys had gone to the beach at about 7:45 p. m. and had been swimming near a rock on shore when they started toward the beach at Burke’s Motel.
Timothy was slightly ahead when the younger brother started floundering. He swam back to help him and the two went under several times before disappearing from sight.
Two teenage girls witnessed the incident.
Members of the Saranac Lake Rescue Squad, joined by state and local police and some civilian boaters began dragging the area shortly after, and the bodies were recovered at 10:20 in about 10 feed of water.
Details of the accident were turned over to the Essex Co. coroner who rendered the who rendered the verdict of accidental drowning.
The boys were the only children of Donald and Rose Meineker, operators of Don's Florist shop, at 7 South St. The family came to Saranac Lake from Little Falls, where both boys were born, ten years ago.
Timothy was a student at North Country Community College, and Jeffrey was in the ninth grade a the Saranac Lake Central School.
Besides their parents, they are survived by their paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Meineker and their maternal grandmother, Mrs. Alvin Monk.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. today in the Saranac Lake Methodist Church, the Rev. Daniel Partridge officiating. Burial will be in the North Elba Cemetery.
