Lt. Merrill Missing
Lt. Donald Merrill, son of Mrs. Frank Cass, Vermontville, a bombardier in the air force, is missing in action over Germany, his mother has been informed. The bombardier's mother received a letter from him Aug. 24 in which he said he was scheduled to go on an important mission over Germany the following day. He failed to return from that mission.

VERMONTVILLE FLIER MET DEATH IN ACTION
Lieut. Donald R. Merrill, of Vermontville, a bombardier in the crew of a Flying Fortress, was killed in action over Germany on August 25, the date on which he previously was reported missing. Verification of his death came in a War Department message to his wife, and his mother, Mrs. Frank Cass of Vermontville.
Lieut. Merrill was born at Vermontville and graduated from Bloomingdale High school. Prior to entering the service on August 6, 1941, he was employed on the farm of Frank Leavitt of Harrietstown.
Lieut. Merrill is survived by his widow, a one-year-old son, Thomas, his mother, two sisters, Miss Mescal Merrill and Mrs. Richard Hough, all of Vermontville, also one brother, Edwin T. Merrill, fireman, first class, on duty in the Pacific.
