SARANAC LAKE — Donald E. Thompson, 73, of 24 Neil St, died Tuesday, May 24 at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid. Born June 24, 1920 in Lisbon, N.Y., he was the son of Leon and Lucy (Wallace) Thompson.

On Feb. 21, 1945 he married Alice Dumont at the Church of the Covenant in Boston, Mass.

A resident of Saranac Lake for most of his life, Mr. Thompson worked for NAPA for 30 years, retiring June 24, 1982, as store manager. Prior to that he worked for Saranac Lake Hardware for six years.  

Mr. Thompson was a veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, and participated in the campaigns of Rome, Arno, Naples, Tunisia and Sicily and earned four Bronze Stars. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, BPOE Lodge No. 1508, and was a member of the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department in the 1950s and 60s.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Patricia "Patty" Nichols of Tupper Lake; and a granddaughter, Alicia.

Calling hours will be held Thursday at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake from 2 to 6 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m., with the Rev. Robert Lowenthal officiating. Interment will follow in the Harrietstown Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Uihlein Mercy Center or the Saranac Lake Fire Department Rescue Squad in care of the funeral home.
