SARANAC LAKE - Dorothy M. Slaughter, 91, of Ormond Beach, Fla. and Saranac Lake, died Sunday, July 17, at the General Hospital of Saranac Lake.
She was born May 27, 1897, in Washington, DC, the daughter of Harrington and Margaret (Broderick) Mills.
Her father owned and operated the Saranac Inn from 1912 until he died in 1935. Her husband then ran it until 1948, when it was sold to the Kirkeby Hotel chain (the Inn was destroyed by fire in June 1978).
She was predeceased by her husband, Laurence, as well as by two sisters, Florence Altemus and Eleanor Reilly, and two sons, Harrington and Laurence.
Survivors include a daughter, Margaret (Mrs. Charles) Wooters of Larchmont; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will take place from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Fortune Funeral Home. A Bible vigil will be take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John in the Wilderness Church" in Lake Clear, with Monsignor Edmund Dumas and the Rev. Thomas Moody, pastor, concelebrating.
Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may made to St. John in the Wilderness Church or the General Hospital of Saranac Lake in care of the funeral home.
