Edward J. Fogarty was a World War II Veteran, who worked for several years for the New York State Department of Conservation, and later as a caretaker at Camp Topridge.

SARANAC LAKE - Edward J. Fogarty, 81, of 33 Algonquin Avenue, died Saturday, April 9, at the General Hospital of Saranac Lake.

He was born Feb. 2, 1907, in Troy, the son of Patrick A. and Mary (Madden) Fogarty.

During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater.

He moved to Saranac Lake in 1957, and worked for several years for the New York State Department of Conservation. He later worked as a caretaker at Camp Topridge until retiring in 1972.

He was married to Marie Dupree Betters on July 28, 1965, in Saranac Lake. She survives.

Mr. Fogarty was a member of American Legion Post #447, and the Saranac Lake chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a stepson, Col. Richard Betters Jr., of Severn, Md.; one brother, Charles J. Fogarty of Troy; one sister, Mrs. Luis (Mary) Mendez of Puerto Rico; two step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Two brothers, John J. Fogarty and Lawrence J. Fogarty, predeceased him.

Calling hours will take place from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Keough and Son Funeral Home, with a Bible vigil service at 7:30 p.m. followed by an American Legion service.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard's Church.

Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery.

Donations in Mr. Fogarty's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Saranac Lake Rescue Squad in care of the funeral home.
