Brother of Pittsburgh Residents, Stricken Ill Friday  Dies at Saranac Lake

Edward H. Mumane, fifty-four, co-partner in the ownership of the St. Regis hotel at Saranac Lake and a former resident of Plattsburgh, died at two o'clock yesterday morning at General hospital in that village. He was taken to the hospital Friday.

Mr. Murnane, a native of Chateaugay, had been in ill health for some time, a victim of a diabetic condition but, until he was stricken seriously ill Friday, had been active in his work associated with the operation of the St. Regis one of the best known hotels, in the Adirondack region. He was transferred from here to Westport and later resigned from the employ of the D. & H., to become manager of the Dock & Coal Company office at Saranac Lake. About 15 years ago he became joint owner of the St. Regis hotel with John English, who survives.

Mr. Murnane was for many years a member of the Knights of Columbus and was prominent in that organization as well as in the Elks. He took a keen interest in both fraternities and was popular among the membership of both.

Having never married Mr. Murnane is survived by three sisters, Rev. Sister Margaret Mary of the Sisters of Mercy and stationed at the Loretta in Plattsburgh and the Misses Mary and Elizabeth Murnane of Beekmantown and four brothers, Thomas Murnane of point au Roche, James Murnane of Beekmantown and Charles and T. J. Murnane of Plattsburgh.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock in St. Bernard's church at Saranac Lake and burial will be made in the family plot at Chateaugay.

[I]t was six years ago—June 2, 1940 —that Ed Murnane passed away. He was at that time the partner of John English in the managership of Hotel St. Regis. Ed had a lot of excellent qualities, he was what some might call a glad-hander, but a sincere one, and enjoyed meeting guests and making them feel at home in the hotel for as long as they stayed. He was always reading something that would give him information and knowledge, rather than reading purely for pleasure. He and I had a great many arguments—about the war, and politics, but all more or less friendly ones. His greatest pleasure lay in getting two people started in a heated argument, and then quietly removing himself from the scene, leaving the protagonists to keep at it, hammer and tongs. Then he'd show up later, grin, and say: "Any casualties." Fond of his little joke, and withal a good man to have for a friend.
