Edwin True Merrill was a World War II veteran.   He was a son of Laurence and Octavia (BankerCass) Merrill.

SARANAC LAKE - Edwin T. Merrill, 75, of Vermontville, died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Born on Sept. 11, 1922 in Vermontville, he was the son of Laurence and Octavia (BankerCass) Merrill.

He married the former Elaine Kay on May 15, 1945.

Mr. Merrill was a resident of Vermontville for most of his life, except for when he was a sheet metal worker for Martin Aircraft in Baltimore in the 1940s. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Navy and was awarded the amphibious assault combat badge in the Asiatic Pacific theatre with three stars.

He had been employed by the Grand Union Company for 25 years, retiring in 1978. When he was able, Mr. Merrill enjoyed fishing and working in the woods.

Survivors include: two daughters, Karen Keefe of Westville and Beth Bordeau of Vermontville; three sons, Bradley Merrill and Dean Merrill, both of Vermontville, and Dennis Merrill of Hermitage, Tenn.; two sisters, Mescal Thomas of Vermontville and Carol Hough of Saranac Lake; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife; a son, Donald in 1970; his step-father, Frank Cass and his brother, Donald, who was killed in action in World War II.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, with a veterans service at 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Church of the Nazarene in Vermontville with the Rev. Kenneth Mihill officiating. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, Vermontville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department or the Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad, in care of the funeral home.
