Frank Schmidt  worked as a butcher at Charlie Green's Market before starting Frank Schmidt's Meat Market on Lake Colby Drive. His wife, Bertha Schmidt (1905 - 1982) ran the Knitting Lounge in downtown Saranac Lake next to Broadway Bridge. Frank and Bertha are both buried in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Their daughter, Louise Schmidt lives at Will Rogers.

Frank Schmidt

SARANAC LAKE - Frank Schmidt, 99, of 40 Shepard Ave., Saranac Lake, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001 at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid, where he had been a resident since 1996.

Born in BAD. Krozingen, Germany on April 12, 1902, he was the son of Friedrich and Anna (Schweizer) Schmidt.

Mr. Schmidt married Bertha Buehler on June 8, 1929 at St. Joseph's Church in Rochester. She predeceased him on Nov. 9, 1982.

Mr. Schmidt has been a resident of Saranac Lake since 1949, coming from Rochester. He owned and operated Frank Schmidt Meat Market in Saranac Lake. He also worked as a butcher at Charlie Green's Market for many years. Mr. Schmidt was a member of St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake and was a member of the Elks BPOE 1508.

He is survived by one daughter, Louise Schmidt of Saranac Lake; one son, Frank W. Schmidt of New York City; one sister, Louise Frank of Rochester; three step-sisters in Germany; a nephew, Carl Frank, and a niece, Marianne Ernest.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willy Schmidt and Fritz Schmidt.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon on Friday, Nov. 2, 2001 at Uihlein Mercy Center with the Rev. Patrick O'Reilly officiating. Burial will follow at St. Bernard's Cemetery in Saranac Lake. Friends wishing to remember Frank Schmidt may make memorial contributions to Uihlein Mercy Center or High Peaks Hospice in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home.
