Gilbert Turner was the son of J. Spencer Turner. Tom Peacock wrote about an episode long past: "I'd come from New York where I'd been looking after Gilbert Turner, the son of  J. Spencer Turner, who made money on tents in the Civil War. I used to stay for two weeks at a time in the Union League Club in New York." Peacock wrote about a moose that "was so tame Turner would lie up against him when he was lying down and go to sleep." Peacock thought the moose was an escapee from a private park. (Adirondack Record and Elizabethtown Post, June 25, 1942.)

On September 14, 1904, the Malone Farmer reported that the People vs. Gilbert Turner was a court "case in ejectment for the removal of a permanent camp from state land." Turner agreed to remove it by November 15.
