Grant Cane was a proprietor of the popular restaurant and nightclub, Downing and Cane's. After the restaurant closed in 1963, he was named manager of the restaurant of the Hotel Saranac. During World War II, he served in the supply department of the Navy from 1943 to 1945.

Grant Cane

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. — Grant Cane, 80, of Brookside Nursing Home here, formerly of Saranac Lake, died Friday, Oct. 28, at the nursing home.

Mr. Cane was born Dec. 28, 1907, in Washington, D.C., the son of U. Grant and Elizabeth Halliard Cane.

He graduated from the Manlius Military Academy, and was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy.

He was predeceased by his wife, the former Marion Downing, in 1982.

Mr. Cane was a resident of Saranac Lake for many years before moving to Vermont in 1982. He was a member of the local B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 1508.

He had been an insurance salesman, and owned and operated the Downing and Cane Restaurant on Broadway in Saranac Lake for many years. He later taught hotel management at Paul Smith's College and was manager of the Hotel Saranac.

Mr. Cane is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ann Lutter of Hartland, Vt.

Private graveside services will be conducted at the Pine Ridge Cemetery.
