Town dedicates cemetery addition
By PAUL OLCHVARY
SARANAC LAKE - An addition which will add much-needed space to the Harrietstown Cemetery was formally dedicated Thursday afternoon at the cemetery grounds off Route 192.
About 25 people gathered at the cemetery to attend the dedication of the John B. Trevor, Jr. Section, which will double the size of the one-acre burial ground.
Ronald Keough, Town of Harrietstown supervisor, officiated at the ceremony and presented a plaque to John B. Trevor Jr., who three years ago donated the land to the town for expanding the cemetery.
"I do think this is a special cemetery," said Trevor, noting that two veterans of the Revolutionary War are buried there. He said he would like the state to erect a special historic marker to commemorate that fact.
Former Harrietstown Councilman Breck Chapin, who describes himself as a member-at-large of the Harrietstown Cemetery Association, said the new addition, took some time in preparation, with survey and other work which he said cost the town "under $5,000."
Chapin said the town took over the cemetery a few years ago, but soon discovered there was no more space. "We owned a cemetery that we couldn't bury anybody in, because there were no plots left to sell," Chapin said.
In addition to thanking Trevor for his gift, Chapin expressed appreciation for the services of the town highway department, work crews from the area state prisons and various members of the Harrietstown Cemetery Commission for helping to prepare the expansion.
Though Chapin says the cemetery is currently supported by taxpayers, he expects that it will eventually be self-sustaining, with the sale and maintenance of lots.
He said there are plans to replace the old metal fence around the cemetery with a new wooden fence next year, although he said the original sign will remain.
The Rev. James Mechem of the First Presbyterian Church of Saranac Lake and Father Tom Moody of St. John in the Wilderness Church in Lake Clear said opening and closing prayers at the ceremony.
