Hayden J. Tormey lived in Onchiota for more than sixty years, having operated Tormey's IGA, gas station and Tormey's Cabins since 1921. He served as Onchiota's postmaster for forty years, retiring in 1959.

SARANAC LAKE- Hayden J. Tormey, 80, of Onchiota died Friday evening at a Potsdam nursing home, where he had stayed for the past year and a half.
Mr Tormey was born Oct 3, 1896, a son of Charles and Mary Williams Tormey.
He is survived by his wife, the former Angeline Patnode, a son, Hayden C. of Onchiota; three daughters, Mrs. Loyal (Violet) Farmer and Mrs. Robert (Laura) Williams, both of Onchiota, and Mrs. John (Dorothy) Schwartz of Rochester, 13 grandchildren and a great-grandchildren.
Mr Tormey was a resident of Onchiota for more than 60 years and was in business there since 1921, operating a general store, gas station and cabins. He was a postmaster for 40 years, retiring in 1959. He was a member of Whiteface Mountain Lodge of F and A.M.
A Masonic Service was said on Sunday evening and funeral services were said this morning at Fortune Funeral Home, with Fr. Peter Ward, pastor of St. Paul's Church, officiating. Interment was in Merrillsville Cemetery. Friends wishing to remember Mr Tormey may make contributions to the Epilepsy Foundation.
