SARANAC LAKE - Helen D. Mullen, 89, of Trudeau Road, Saranac Lake, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000 at her home.

Born March 12, 1911 in Enosburg Falls, Vt., she was a daughter of Nathan and Bessie (Gates) Duba.

Mrs. Mullen was a graduate of Enosburg High School and the Mary Fletcher School of Nursing, Burlington, Vt. A 52-year resident of Saranac Lake, she worked as a nurse at Stony Wald and was a nurse at Ray Brook State Hospital for 25 years, retiring as head nurse. She was a volunteer in the gift shop at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake for 25 years.

Mrs. Mullen was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Saranac Lake. She was a veteran of World War II serving as a lieutenant in the Navy, and was discharged in 1953. She enjoyed knitting, gardening and reading.

Survivors include her husband, Bernard Mullen, whom she married Nov. 28, 1950; a brother-in-law, Richard B. Mullen of Aptos, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Mildred Mahan of Sharps, Va.; four nieces, Kathleen Schneck of Saranac Lake, Patricia Keet of California, Sue Ramsey and Liz Roberts of Sharps, Va.; and a nephew, Bill Mahan of Woodbridge, Va.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and James Duba, and a brother-in-law, Bertrand Mullen. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. William Neil officiating, interment will be in Harrietstown Cemetery, Saranac Lake.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
