Dr. Herbert Muhlenberg Bergamini was summer physician to the Whitneys at Forked Lake, New York, part of the Whitney Preserve from about 1929 until World War II. He performed orthopedic surgery in Lake Placid, where he was later joined by his son, Herbert, the "Junior Doctor."

Dr. Herbert Bergamini dies in Placid at 85
LAKE PLACID — Dr. Herbert Muhlenberg Bergamini, 85, of 14 Swiss Road, a Lake Placid surgeon since 1945, died Thursday afternoon at Placid Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Bergamini was born in North Adams, Mass., a son of William and Malinda Rowland VanWie Bergamini and was reared in Athens, NY. He graduated from Rutgers University, where he was a member of the varsity football team, in 1913, and obtained his doctor's degree at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1917.
He served as a lieutenant in the army Medical Corps in France during World War I and as a colonel in Panama and the United States in World War II. He volunteered for the Korean War but was not accepted.
He had been a visitor to Lake Placid for 40 years before moving here, ever since he first attended Camp Dudley in 1905. Before coming to Lake Placid he was an attending surgeon at Bellevue Hospital and Reconstruction Hospital in New York City, and a consulting surgeon at Bellevue, Green County Memorial Hospital, and Knickerbocker Hospital. He also was an associate professor of traumatic surgery at Columbia University and Cornell Medical College.
After coming to Lake Placid he was an attending surgeon at Saranac Lake General Hospital as well as at Placid Memorial Hospital and a consulting surgeon at the Veterans Administration Hospital at Sunmount and Mercy General Hospital in Tupper Lake.
His memberships include the University Club of New York and the New York Surgical Society. He was a fellow of the American Association for Surgery of Trauma, the American College of Surgeons, and the New York Academy of Medicine and a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery.
Dr. Bergamini had been a member of the Lake Placid Club since 1920 and president of the Lake Placid Club Foundation and chairman of the Board of Trustees of Northwood School. He also was a member of the Lake Placid Kiwanis Club, American Legion Post 326, and Masonic Lodge 834. He had been a junior warden and vestryman of St. Eustace Church.
In 1919, Dr. Bergamini was married at Montclair, N.J. to Anne Davenport Sparks, who died, and in 1934 he was married at Whitney Park at Long Lake to Mary Beech Hinckley who died in 1951. In 1957, Dr. Bergamini was married, at Catskill, to Kathleen Mary Ardill who survives him. Other survivors are: three sons, Edwin Sparks Bergamini of Brooklyn, Dr. Herbert Van Wie Bergamini of Lake Placid, and John Davenport Bergamini of New York City; a brother, William of Catskill; and four grandchildren.
