The Hi-Y Club was a YMCA program aimed at high school-age boys; separate clubs for girls were added later. Nationally the clubs date to the 1890s, though in the Adirondacks they started in the 1930s.

U. N. Assembly Meets In S.L: Hi-Y Version

Eleven Clubs Set To Debate Controversial International Questions

The United Nations General Assembly is meeting in the Saranac Lake High School tonight. At least, a plausible facsimile thereof.

Many of the most crucial and controversial questions facing the United Nations now. and like to face the organization in the future, will be argued tonight and tomorrow by the Hi-Y clubs of the North Country area and Canada in the local high school auditorium, under the sponsorship of the YMCA.

Some eleven clubs will participate, and the event will start off at 6:30 this evening at a supper for the delegates in the high school cafeteria. James Loeb, copublisher of The Enterprise, will be the dinner speaker.

All of the boys and girls from distant Hi-Y clubs are to be lodged with local families.

Jack Burger of Westport is director of the Hi-Y in the area. The adult advisors for the U. N. Assembly are two members of the Saranac Lake High School faculty, Jane Baber for the girls and Bertram Dorsch for the boys.

The president of the Hi-Y Council is Joanne Manning of Saranac Lake, and John O'Donnell of Newcomb will serve as Secretary General of the U. N. Assembly this weekend…
