SARANAC LAKE - Dr. Ilse B. Gronemeijer, 95, of Saranac Lake died Wednesday, April 8, 1998 in her home.

Born on September 11, 1902 in Vienna, Austria, she was the daughter of Dr. Heinrich and Ella Kummerling. She studied at the University of Vienna, Austria, where she received her doctor of political science degree; she was the youngest person at that time to receive a doctorate.

She married Dr. Carl F. Gronemeijer, secretary of the government of the Netherlands West Indies, in 1938. She was active in Red Cross work on three continents, - in Europe, the United States and Canada, and in the West Indies. She and her husband moved to Saranac Lake after his retirement.

As an active member of the Garden Club, the Democratic Club, the Rock and Mineral Club, the Friends of the Library, the Cancer Society, the Hospital Auxiliary and the Duplicate Bridge Club she did extensive publicity, organized programs and held positions. She was also a member of the Fish and Game Club, the Humane Society, the Crisis Center, and Literacy Volunteers.

She was the most senior member of the Women's College Scholarship Club, having joined in the 1940s. For several decades, she was the publicist, during the era of Chapeau Teas in the 1960s and early fashion shows of the 1970s. She served for many years on scholarship committees right up to the present time and was currently serving on the Continuing Education Scholarship Committee.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, April 13, at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home. There will be a memorial service immediately following calling hours at 4 p.m. on Monday, officiated by the Rev. Max Coots, pastor of the Unitarian Church in Canton.

Cremation will follow and burial will be at Pine Ridge Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to each person's favorite charity.
