Jacob 'Jack' Hirsch

SARANAC LAKE - Jacob "Jack" Hirsch, 88, of 20 Church Street, died Tuesday, June 28, at the General Hospital of Saranac Lake.

Born in New York City May 1, 1900, he was the son of Phillip and Sara (Pfeffer) Hirsch.

He was a veteran of the Army in World War I and served in the Canal Zone and on troop carriers.

A resident of Saranac Lake since 1922, Mr. Hirsch was a member of the American Legion and VFW.

He married the former Margaret Calhoun, who died Nov. 11, 1979.

Mr. Hirsch was a jewelry salesman.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ruth Mazalanski of Los Angeles.

Calling hours will take place from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Keough and Son Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A Bible vigil will be said at 7:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard's Church, with Rev. Douglas Comstock officiating.

Following the Mass, burial will take place in St. Bernard's Cemetery.

Donations in Mr. Hirsch's memory may be made to the Saranac Lake Rescue Squad, or the Saranac Lake Adult Center, care of Keough and Son Funeral Home.

In the 1960's Jack Hirsch spent many summer evenings entertaining the area kids from Baker Street and Park Avenue with great stories from his life.  During the Christmas season he would invite the neighborhood kids into his home and have a holiday present for them.
