James E. Thornton was a World War II veteran.  He was a son of Clarence and Mary McMichael Thornton.

A Roman Catholic Requiem Funeral Mass offered at 10 a.m. Friday at the Methodist Church for James E. Thornton, 49, who died Wednesday at Saranac Lake General Hospital after a long illness. Interment will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Keough Memorial Chapels from 2 to 4 and 7 to 10 p.m. today. A veterans' service will be held there at 7:45 this evening, followed by an Elks service at 8 o'clock and a spiritual service at 8:15.

Mr. Thornton had lived in Saranac Lake for 25 years. He was employed for 21 years at Plattsburgh Motors and for the last four years, as bookkeeper at D. Cohen and Sons. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of BPOE 1508 and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was born April 10, 1920 in Wayne, N.J., a son of Clarence and Mary McMichael Thornton.

Survivors are his wife, the former Elizabeth Rock; two sons, James of Rensselaer and Gary of Albany; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Buckley of Rochester; his mother, now Mrs. Gerald Coogan, of New York City; a brother, Robert of Garden City, L.I.; and a sister, Mrs. Audrey Barry of Rosedale, L.I.
