James Gragg, 71, formerly of 17 Ampersand Bay Road in Saranac Lake, died Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. 

Born in Watertown on July 31, 1932, he was the son of Harry and Lola Gragg. 

Mr. Gragg was a 1953 graduate of Paul Smith's College receiving an A.A.S. degree and was a 1959 graduate of the University of Washington with a B.S. degree. He also completed an engineering economics course at Union College in Schenectady and an executive development program for recreational administration at Indiana University.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from 1954 to 1956 in the Signal Corps.

From 1958 to 1960 he was survey party chief for Robert W. Jones, P.E., L.S. in Mercer Island, Wash., and from 1960 to 1962 was an engineer for the Hall Ski Lift Company in Watertown. From 1962 to 1973 he was park engineer for the Saratoga-Capital District Park Commission and from 1973 to 1977 he was senior park engineer for the Taconic State Park commission in Strattsburgh. From 1977 to 1979 he was construction coordinator for the XIII Olympic Winter Games. From 1982 until recently he was chief engineer for the Olympic Regional Development Authority in Lake Placid. He was a member of the Saranac Lake Lions Club, past Commander of the American Legion and was very active in the Paul Smith's College Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife Barbara of Saranac Lake; two brothers: William Gragg of Syracuse and John Gragg of Santa Barbara, Calif.; a sister: Patricia Berk of Poughkeepsie; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services.
