John J. Helms was a guide and served as the head carpenter at Camp Topridge.  He and his wife worked for Dr. Francis B. Trudeau until they opened their own tourist home,  Pine Haven, near Easy Street in Paul Smiths

PAUL SMITHS — John J. Helms, 74, of Paul Smith's, died Tuesday evening at the General Hospital of Saranac Lake.

He was born in Chasm Falls on April 15, 1905, the son of Bert and Mary (Brown) Helms.

Mr. Helms had been a resident of Paul Smith's for 47 years. He and his wife had owned and operated the Pine Haven Tourist Home until it burned in 1978.

He was a hunting guide for many years, and later was the head carpenter at the Marjorie Merriweather Post Camp until he retired in 1967.

He is survived by his wife, the former Marian Fountain; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Carolyn) Trudeau, of Saranac Lake, and Mrs. Gerald (Mary Ellen) Salls, of Gabriels; one brother, Watson, of Newcomb; three sisters; Mrs. Marian Lester of Malone, Mrs. Alice Smith of Owls Head; and Mrs. Dora Fountain of Paul Smith’s.

Also surviving are ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He will repose at his home. Calling hours will be for the immediate family and relatives only.

The funeral service will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Assumption in Gabriels. The Celebrant will be Father Peter Ward. Friends are invited to the funeral service.

Burial will be in the Brighton Cemetery at Gabriels.

Friends wishing to remember Mr. Helms may make contributions to the Paul Smiths-Gabriels fire department.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Keough and Sons Memorial Chapel.
