John Jay Miller was one of Captain Pliny Miller's three sons. He inherited eighty acres that included much of the central part of Saranac Lake. He built the Riverside Inn, which he later sold to Orlando Blood. He was active in local politics, frequently elected to the posts of Supervisor and of Town Clerk, and he was the leader of the Democratic Party. Donaldson lists him as a stagecoach driver. 1
He married Abigail Macauley, with whom he had six daughters, Amanda, Amarette, Clarissa, Emeline, Catherine and Anna O. Miller, and one son, Van Buren Miller. John, Abigail and their daughter Anna O., who died April 25, 1899, are buried in section L 98 of Pine Ridge Cemetery.
