JOHN M. MUNN
SARANAC LAKE — A funeral service was held this morning at 11 at St. Bernard's Church for John M. Munn, 57, of Saranac Lake who died Friday at his home on Ampersand Avenue.
Mr. Munn was born in the community in 1916, the son of Matthew and Agnes Munn. He attended St. Bernard's Catholic School and Saranac Lake High School where he was an outstanding athlete. He was a star halfback on the Wilson coached teams of the mid 1930s and won sectional honors as a hurdler for the Red and White.
Refusing scholarship offers, Mr. Munn entered the Air Force and was schooled at Sebring and Hendricks Air Force base where he developed and maintained a high rating in aircraft communications and systems maintenance.
He had also worked in aircraft manufacturing plants in Rochester prior to the war. He owned J.M. Munn's Business Machines on Broadway. The name is being carried on by a son in the new Main Street location.
John Munn married Alice Garwood in 1942 and they had four sons and two daughters: John Jr., Michael, James of Saranac Lake, Garwood of Bloomingdale, JoAnne Fountain of Malone, and Marilyn Smythe of Santa Ana, Calif.
Mr. Munn's brother, James, who retired recently from the Associated Press Washington Bureau, lives in Virginia and a second brother Robert, a former career Air Force officer, has entered private business in Plattsburgh. He also had two sisters, Alice Munn Wallace widow of former Saranac Lake police chief, Bill Wallace, and Helen Meldrem of Cortland.
John Munn was an outdoors man and a nature lover. He spent long hours walking the hills and mountains. He enjoyed growing and transplanting wild shrubs, trees and flowers and beautifying places that looked ugly.
Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery in the spring. The Keough and Son Memorial Chapels had charge of arrangements for the funeral.
