John Paul Clancy came to Saranac Lake in the early or mid twenties thinking he would die of TB. He stayed at the Trudeau Sanatorium and recovered. He bought what became known as the Clancy Cottage. Most of the patients were Italian. There were 38 patients. Lena was Italian and was able to speak Italian with the patients.

John P. Clancy

SARANAC LAKE - John P. Clancy, age 89, of 30 Greenwood St., Lake Placid, died Tuesday Jan. 29, 2002 at Uihlein Mejrcy Center.

Born in Brooklyn on Dec. 28, 1912, he was the son of John and Adelaide (Esposito) Clancy.

Mr. Clancy was a graduate of Saranac Lake High School and was a career veteran of the U.S. armed forces. He served a full enlistment in the Army, and upon his discharge he enlisted in the Air Force, where he was in the military police. He later retired to the Air Force Reserves. He was a 20-year member of the American Legion Post 326 in Lake Placid and a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks, Ticonderoga Lodge 1494. He had been a resident of Ticonderoga for most of his life prior to relocating in Lake Placid in the late 1970s. Mr. Clancy worked at the International Paper Company, and later was the proprietor, of Pearl's Department Store in Ticonderoga. After this, John became a car salesman for various area car dealers, retiring in the 1990s.

He is survived by one sister, Mary Kirby of Washington; six nieces; two nephews; and his special friend of many yeais, Marion Daby of Lake Placid He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Ethel Craddock; two brothers, Louis Clancy and Paul Clancy; and a sister, Adelaide Finn.

A memorial Mass will be announced at a later date.

Interment will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery in Saranac Lake.

The Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake was in charge of arrangements.
