Joseph Cavallo was a World War II veteran. He was a son of Jerry Cavallo, who founded the Belvedere Restaurant, and he operated it from 1948 to 1983.

SARANAC LAKE - Joseph P. Cavallo Sr., 81, of 91 Turtle pond Road, Saranac Lake, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Born in Utica on Jan. 13, 1923 , he was the son of Jerry and Roccatella (Urgo) Cavallo.

Joe had been a resident of Saranac Lake for most of his life.  He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Navy in the South Pacific. Joe's father Jerry opened the Belvedere Restaurant in Saranac Lake in 1933 and Joe Joseph P. Cavallo Sr. took over its operation in 1948. He continued to operate the restaurant until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife, the former Ann Cole of Saranac Lake; two sons: Joseph Cavallo Jr. and Gerard Cavallo and his wife Joanne, both of Saranac Lake; one daughter, Ellen Ann Campion of Jay; and three grandchildren: Jay Campion, Christopher Cavallo and Alyssa Cavallo.

He was predeceased by his parents; his son, Daniel Cavallo; and a sister, Genevieve Cavallo.

Calling hours were private. A Mass of Christian burial was held at 11:15 a.m. today at St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake with the Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Burial followed in St. Bernard's Cemetery in Saranac Lake.

Friends wishing to remember Mr. Cavallo may make memorial contributions to Carmelite Monastery or High Peaks Hospice in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake.
