Kathleen  Saunders McParland Hammond [other sources give her name as Kathleen McFarlane Hammond, which is incorrect]  was the daughter of a wealthy Canadian liquor dealer from Gananoque and Kingston, Ontario. She was a composer of musical revues. She married Frederick S. Hammond, a Toronto stockbroker, in 1909. The Hammonds were first class passengers on the Lusitania on May 7, 1915, when it was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. Mr. Hammond died, but his wife survived, though she contracted tuberculosis soon after, and came to Saranac Lake, staying first at the Santanoni Apartments, and then moving to the Morgan Cottage.

She was a favorite of her physician, Dr. Lawrason Brown. Her nurse was Edna Carr.
