WIRD creator, Lincoln Dixon, dies

SARANAC LAKE - Lincoln F. Dixon, 63, of Bloomingdale, who built and operated the WIRD Radio Station in Lake Placid for 10 years died at his home in Bloomingdale yesterday.

He had been a resident of the Saranac Lake area since 1956. Previously he had been employed at NBC at the Empire State Building in New York City as an electrical engineer for 15 years. Later he was chief engineer for WPTZ-TV in Plattsburgh for 15 years. He then began, WIRD, and was president and part owner of the station for 10 years. He was also vice president arid director of engineering in Honolulu, Hawaii of station KGMB Television and Radio.

Mr. Dixon was a licensed radio amateur operator for over 50 years. He attended Farleigh Dixson College [sic, Fairleigh Dickinson] in Hackensack, N.J., Roanoke College in Salem Va., the RCA Institute and Bishop's Institute, both in New York City, and obtained his doctorate at Columbia University.

Mr Dixon was born Aug. 20, 1926, the son of William I. and Helen Louise (Milliken) Dixon.

He was a veteran of World War II serving with the United States Army in Italy, Sicily, Africa, Tunisia, Sardinia and other theaters of operation. He held the rank of master sergeant. He was a professional engineer throughout his career.

Survivors include his wife, Carroll Lucille (Dick) Dixson of Bloomingdale; three daughters, April Dixon of Lake Placid, and Mrs. Robin Muldoon and Mrs. Dawne Bailey, both of Saranac Lake, and five grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Keough and Son Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The Rev. John McClester of the Presbyterian Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Pine Ridge Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Saranac Lake Rescue Squad or the Heart Fund in care, of the funeral home.
