SARANAC LAKE — Louis R. Kains, 71, of the Harrietstown Road, died Friday at Saranac Lake General Hospital.

Mr. Kains was born in Reading, Pa., a son of E. Douglas and Maude Benton Kains, and had lived in Saranac Lake for 26 years. For 23 years he was organist and choir director at St. Luke's Church and retired in 1970. He also was a piano turner for 40 years.

For many years, Mr. Kains directed the Saranac Lake Oratorio Society and, in 1952, directed the society in the production of his own work, "O, Lord, Rebuke Me Not," based on the Sixth Psalm.

Survivors are: his wife, Elizabeth Goddard Kains; a son, John D. of Plattsburgh; five daughters, Mrs. Joyce Garwood of Charlottesville, Va., Mrs. Joan Kozlowski of Newark, N.Y.; Mrs. Mary Oltz of Ithaca, Mrs. Grace Lamica of Saranac Lake, and Mrs. Elizabeth Webber of Ithaca; a sister, Mrs. James Dash of Philadelphia, Pa.; and 17 grandchildren.

The funeral service was held this morning at St. Luke's Church with the rector, the Rev. Peter O. Hill officiating. Interment will be in Harrietstown Cemetery.
