E. Major Day was a World War II veteran; he operated the Dinet-Mooney wholesale Candy Business in Tupper Lake in 1953, retiring in 1978.

TUPPER LAKE — E. Major Day, 80, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1993, at his Upper Saranac Lake home.

Born Sept. 14, 1913 in Victor, Mo., he was the son of Melville Fuller and Marcie Anne (Major) Day. He married Martha Brier [sic] of Saranac Lake on Sept. 30, 1939. She died Oct. 24,1989.

Mr. Day served as a first sergeant in the U.S. Army in France and Germany in World War II, and received a Bronze Star for his actions.

He was employed by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and Pearstyne Bros. Tobacco and Candy Company of Albany, before purchasing the Dinet-Mooney wholesale Candy Business in Tupper Lake in 1953. He retired in 1978.

He was a member of the United Community Church of Tupper Lake, the Island Chapel Committee of Upper Saranac Lake, Mount Arab Lodge, No. 847 Free and Accepted Masons of Tupper Lake, Order of the Elks Saranac Lake Lodge, National Association of Rainbow Division Veterans, No-Miss Hunting Club of Piercefield, and was a former board member of Tupper Lake National Bank.

Survivors include two sons, Major Jr. and Peter S.; a daughter, Barbara; two brothers, Orville and Howard; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

There will be no immediate service or calling hours. A graveside service in Tupper Lake will be announced later this spring.

Memorial donations may be made to the United Community Church Sunday School program or a charity of choice, in care of the Rennell Funeral Home of Tupper Lake, which is handling arrangements.
