Pine Ridge Cemetery Born: 1885

Married: George C. Sageman

Children: Dr. Bradley Sageman

Margaret C. Cavanaugh Sageman was the proprietor of the Sageman Cottage and the Bela Bartok Cottage. She was a dedicated nurse, but also an astute buiness woman— in the late 1940s, she recognized that the development of Streptomycin, the first effective drug treatment for tuberculosis, would dramatically reduce the need for Saranac Lake's traditional cure cottages. Accordingly, in 1948 she converted the Sageman Cottage to apartments, a move that was opposed by other sanatorium operators as being bad for the morale of the community. Inevitably, other operators followed suit, and in 1954, the Trudeau Sanatorium closed its doors.
