Miss Marjorie Smith

SARANAC LAKE - Miss Marjorie Smith, 80, of Trudeau Road and a lifelong resident of Saranac Lake, died this morning at the General Hospital of Saranac Lake.

She was born June 6, 1902 in Saranac Lake, the daughter of Edward and Cora (Norton) Smith.

A cousin Eleanor of California survives. Miss Smith has been employed as a bacteriologist at Trudeau Sanatorium and later at Trudeau Institute until her retirement. She also worked for several years as a volunteer for the St. Bernard's School library.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Fortune Funeral Home and include a Bible vigil that evening.

A mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday at 11 a.m., at St. Bernard's Church.

Burial will follow in Pine Ridge Cemetery.

Footnote:

  1. Marjorie Smith appears in Census records in 1910 and 1930 with a middle initial of "I" but in 1915, 1920 and 1925, no middle initial was used, and her name appears in news stories without an initial.  The Pine Ridge Cemetery records use "M" as her middle initial, as does an auction notice from 1980.  James H. Richards, author of The Reverend Samuel Smith and Family, 1804 - 2006, suggest that she may have made the change when she joined the Catholic Church, as a new baptismal name would have been quite common.
