Marshall Eugene Mussen guided and served as caretaker at the Polhemus Camp on Spitfire Lake for 44 years, retiring in 1932. He was a son of George W. Mussen, who also worked for the Polhemus family.
At the time of his death he and his wife resided on the property of his daughter, Catherine White, in Tupper Lake. Catherine and her husband built a cottage for her parents to live in at 48 First Street.

Marshall E. Mussen Dies at Home Here After Long Illness
Marshall Eugene Mussen, 75, a lifelong resident of Saranac Lake, died Wednesday evening at 6:10 at 48 First St., Tupper Lake, after a long illness.
In falling health for the past five years, he had been confined to bed here since May 15. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Alphonsus Church, and interment will be in the White family plot at St. Alphonsus cemetery here.
Mr. and Mrs. Mussen had been spending the winters here for the past five years at the home of their daughter, Mrs. William H. White, and since last April had resided in the cottage which Mr. and Mrs. White erected for them at 48 First St.
He was born at Saranac Lake on May 25, 1871, the son of George W. and Julia Brown Mussen, who settled there among the early pioneers, before the Civil War. On Aug 2, 1892, he was married at Saranac Lake by the Rev. Father John Waters to Miss Catherine Leonard, who survives.
Mr. Mussen was employed as caretaker and guide for 44 years at the Polhemus Camp on Spitfire Lake, near Paul Smiths, until his retirement in 1932.
Surviving, besides his wife, are one daughter, Mrs. William (Katherine) White, Tupper Lake, and one son. Leonard J. Mussen, Lake Clear; one granddaughter, Marie K. Mussen, Lake Clear; three brothers, Willis and Fremont Mussen of North Syracuse and Wilbur Mussen, Saranac Lake, and two sisters, Mrs. Albert (Gertrude) Davidson and Mrs. Lillian. Woodruff, both of Saranac Lake.
