Marshall Ward Miller was a son of Ensine Miller and Narcissa Baker Miller. After his mother's death, his father married her sister, Julia A. Miller, who is believed to have named Marshall Street for him in the lands she later inherited from her husband, Ensine Miller, and developed as Villa Sites.

Marshall lost Pliny Miller's sawmill to foreclosure in 1879.
